Florida ranks among top states for clean energy growth, led by solar power

With federal incentives in place and increasing clean energy capacity, Florida is poised to further solidify its position as a clean energy leader.

Florida has emerged as a national leader in renewable energy, ranking among the top five states for clean energy growth over the past decade, according to a report by the Environment America Research and Policy Center. The state’s solar energy production surged in 2023, generating 17,808 GWh—more than all the solar power produced before 2020 combined. Florida now ranks third nationally in solar production, following Texas and California.

Residential solar installations in Florida have grown by over 1,000% in the past five years, though the state utilizes just 2% of its solar potential. This growth has been accompanied by advances in battery storage, where Florida ranks fourth nationally, and a strong showing in electric vehicle adoption, with the second-highest number of EV registrations in the U.S.

Despite these achievements, challenges remain. Florida has banned offshore wind development, removed a 100% renewable energy goal, and has yet to deploy $105 million in federal EV infrastructure funds received in 2022. However, upcoming federal funds, including $350 million for home energy rebates in 2025, could bolster renewable energy adoption.

Advocates emphasize the importance of policy support to accelerate clean energy adoption and enhance resilience against extreme weather events. With federal incentives in place and increasing clean energy capacity, Florida is poised to further solidify its position as a clean energy leader.
